Varda Space Industries Unveils W-5: A Revolutionary Hypersonic Reentry Capsule and Government Payload
Varda Space Industries, a leading orbital economy infrastructure provider, has successfully launched its fifth mission, W-5, from Vandenberg Space Force Base in Lompoc, California. This mission marks a significant milestone in the company's journey, as it showcases the capabilities of Varda's cutting-edge hypersonic reentry capsule and its collaboration with the government through the Prometheus program.
W-5 is the fourth launch of 2025 and the fifth overall mission for Varda. The vehicle is a testament to the company's innovation, as it carries a government payload funded by the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) and commercial space entities. This partnership aims to address a critical national security need by accelerating the development of novel science and technology experiments in the extreme reentry environment.
The W-5 mission is a prime example of Varda's dual-use approach, leveraging commercial entities to provide a low-cost, high-cadence flight testbed for the reentry test community. The hypersonic reentry capsule, a key component of the W-5 vehicle, is designed to reproduce the most challenging hypersonic and reentry flight environments. It enters the atmosphere at an astonishing 18,000 miles per hour, achieving Mach 25+ on every mission before safely landing by parachute on Earth.

The W-5 vehicle is a masterpiece of engineering, comprising three Varda-made components: the hypersonic reentry capsule, the satellite bus, and an ablative heatshield made of C-PICA. The entire W-series vehicle is produced at Varda's El Segundo headquarters, showcasing the company's commitment to innovation and quality.
