In an exclusive interview with Variety, the 22-year-old Australian singer-songwriter revealed his third studio album, 'Before I Forget,' set to drop on January 9th via Columbia Records. The announcement comes with the release of a new R&B-infused single, 'A Perfect World.'
Laroi opens up about the creative process behind the album, explaining that he initially had a different project ready for release. However, he decided to scrap it due to its stark sonic and thematic differences. The artist admits, 'It didn't flow as well, and I felt I had outgrown it. I wasn't comfortable releasing it.'
The new album, 'Before I Forget,' showcases a more emotional and nostalgic sound. Laroi describes it as 'sadder' and 'more emotionally charged.' He spent the last three months refining the album, keeping only one track, 'I'm So In Love With You,' from the previous batch. This time around, he had a clearer vision and a more focused approach, working with the same crew.
The lead single, 'A Perfect World,' explores Laroi's desire to reconnect with an ex, a theme he also touches on in the previously released track, 'A Cold Play.' In the latter, he questions his ability to fix a past relationship, asking, 'Who was I to think that I could fix you, baby?'
The album cover, captured by photographer Thibaut Grevet in the South of France, is a powerful visual representation of the record. Laroi's silhouette, touching his lips with his head emerging from a cool-toned pool, symbolizes the album's emotional depth. He explains, 'It just stood out and felt like the perfect representation of the album's personal and emotional nature.'
'Before I Forget' is a collaborative effort, co-produced and co-written by Laroi's younger brother, Auz, alongside a talented team of producers and songwriters, including Dopam!ne, Sean Phelan, and many more. The album promises to be a deeply personal and reflective journey, offering fans a glimpse into Laroi's thoughts and feelings.
