R-HEXSuit: The Revolutionary Soft Exosuit to Combat Muscle Loss in Space (2025)

Astronauts face a critical challenge in space: muscle loss. Despite rigorous exercise routines, the absence of Earth's gravity takes a toll on their bodies. But what if there was a way to simulate Earth's gravity, helping astronauts maintain their strength and health in space?

This is where the R-HEXSuit comes in, a groundbreaking fabric-based exoskeleton developed by Emanuele Pulvirenti and his team at the University of Bristol's Soft Robotics Lab. This innovative suit aims to tackle the musculoskeletal problems astronauts encounter, without hindering their movement.

Currently, astronauts spend 2-3 hours daily on exercises like the Advanced Resistive Exercise Device (ARED) and the T2 (COLBERT) Treadmill to combat muscle and bone density loss. However, these methods aren't always effective, and astronauts still experience significant strength loss.

Traditional exoskeletons are often bulky and heavy, which can be problematic, especially during launch. But the R-HEXSuit offers a different approach. Weighing a mere 1.4 kg, it's designed to be worn under clothing, making it far less cumbersome. It's constructed from textiles and incorporates Bubble Artificial Muscles (BAMs). These BAMs are lightweight, cost-effective, and can lift up to 1,000 times their own weight.

Dr. Pulvirenti, with a little help from his grandmother, designed the R-HEXSuit. The artificial muscles, composed of nylon and thermoplastic layers, expand and contract, providing both muscle power assistance and resistance. This allows astronauts to exert force similar to what they would on Earth, even in the low-gravity environment of space.

To test the assistive version of the suit, the team utilized the Exterres CRATER facility, the largest lunar simulation facility in the southern hemisphere. They integrated the suit into a spacesuit and observed test subjects moving on various lunar surfaces. This was part of the “World’s Biggest Analog” mission, involving over 200 scientists focused on lunar missions.

Prior to this, the resistive version was tested at the Locomotion on Other Planets (L.O.O.P) facility at the University of Milan. Here, subjects were suspended to simulate lunar gravity and used a treadmill. The results showed that the resistive suit increased the metabolic requirements of walking to match those on Earth. They believe this provides the right kind of resistance to counteract the negative effects of low gravity, although further long-term studies are needed to confirm this fully.

But here's where it gets controversial... The R-HEXSuit isn't without its drawbacks. Users rated its comfort at only 3.1 out of 5 in a post-use survey, mainly due to the straps rubbing against their shins. However, the designers are working on improvements. Also, the assistive and resistive configurations are currently separate, but the team hopes to integrate both functionalities soon.

While the R-HEXSuit is still in development, its unique, lightweight, and unobtrusive design sets it apart from other potential space-based exoskeletons. If the comfort issues are resolved and the assistive and resistive modes are combined, this exosuit could become a game-changer in space exploration.
