Get ready, rally fans! A new challenger is emerging in the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) from 2027, promising a fresh perspective on the sport. The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) has just announced the arrival of Project Rally One, a new Constructor set to shake things up under the WRC's updated regulations.
This exciting project is spearheaded by experienced motorsport engineer Lionel Hansen, WRC specialist Yves Matton, and Prospeed. Project Rally One is unique because it's the first project officially led by a Tuner in this new era of the WRC. They're not just building a car; they're crafting a whole new approach. They'll design, build, and homologate a WRC27-specification car, ready to hit the track when the next regulatory cycle begins.
This announcement follows the FIA's approval of the final pieces of the WRC27 regulations, a comprehensive ten-year plan that will govern the championship starting in 2027. This framework is a game-changer because it formally defines what a Constructor is and, for the first time, allows independent Tuners like Project Rally One to homologate their cars. This means they can compete on a level playing field with the big Manufacturers.
So, what's this new car all about? It's designed to meet the WRC27 technical regulations, which aim to keep costs under control, capped at €345,000. The car will feature a tubular safety cell, a double-wishbone suspension layout, four-wheel-drive, and a sustainably fueled 1.6-litre turbocharged internal combustion engine.
But here's where it gets interesting: Project Rally One is focusing heavily on optimizing suspension, geometry, weight distribution, and overall reliability. They're also considering customer needs and the different demands of various championships. This attention to detail could give them a competitive edge.
Significant progress has already been made. The chassis design and build are complete, and prototype assembly is underway. The car will undergo extensive testing, including over 6,000 km of gravel and asphalt testing, before homologation. The first shakedown is scheduled for the spring of 2026.

Lionel Hansen, Co-Founder of Project Rally One, expressed his excitement, stating that entering the FIA World Rally Championship is a significant moment for them. He added that the new technical framework creates the right environment for independent projects, allowing them to develop a car from scratch and compete against manufacturers at the highest level.
Malcolm Wilson, FIA Deputy President for Sport, agrees, saying that Project Rally One's arrival confirms that a more cost-effective and accessible technical framework is drawing new interest in the sport. He emphasized the importance of attracting new entrants for the WRC's long-term growth.
Xavier Mestelan Pinon, FIA Chief Technical and Safety Officer, explained that the WRC27 vision was to reduce costs, broaden participation, and ensure the championship's stability. He believes Project Rally One's entry is proof that this vision is becoming a reality. By opening homologation to tuners, they've created an environment where they can compete on equal terms with Manufacturers.
Peter Thul, WRC Promoter Director of Sport, is also optimistic, stating that this announcement confirms the automotive world's eagerness to be part of rallying. He's confident that this is just the beginning and that the mix of WRC27-homologated cars alongside existing Rally2 cars will lead to one of the most competitive fields in recent WRC history.
