But here's where it gets interesting: this expansion hinges on the finalization of the proposed deal between the three Pacific countries and Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. While the Tongan and Fijian governments have already given their approval, the proposal awaits the green light from Samoa's Prime Minister, Laaulialemalietoa Polataivao Leuatea Fosi Schmidt. He recently returned home after receiving medical treatment in New Zealand. Sources suggest that despite the delay, Prime Minister Schmidt is supportive of the proposal.
This investment dwarfs the previous commitment. Should the deal go through, it would represent a tenfold increase compared to the $15 million grant allocated in the 2022-23 budget papers through PacificAus Sports.
The context of this significant investment is crucial. Over the past year, the region has seen increased political maneuvering, particularly following the announcement of a $600 million government package to support rugby league in Papua New Guinea. This move sparked interest from other nations, leading to negotiations with Chinese government officials.
Fiji's Rugby Union, for instance, signed a memorandum of understanding with the Chinese Rugby Football Association. Tonga Rugby Union also formed a partnership with China, which funded the construction of their new $40 million national sports complex. In Samoa, China offered to build a new national stadium.
And this is the part most people miss: China's growing influence in the region has prompted the Albanese government to step in with this tripartite proposal.
If the deal proceeds as expected, Rugby Australia is poised to extend invitations to the Pacific nations, allowing them to participate in its new third-tier competition.
The Super Rugby AUS competition, which began in 2025, could potentially double in length with the addition of the Drua, along with teams from Tonga and Samoa.
