Ontario is taking a bold step to revolutionize cancer treatment! The province is expediting public coverage for five groundbreaking drugs targeting six types of cancer, aiming to provide faster access to life-changing therapies. The government's Funding Accelerated for Specific Treatments (FAST) program is a three-year pilot project designed to accelerate coverage for Ontarians facing cancer. This initiative will cover drugs for lung, prostate, liver, and colorectal cancers, as well as leukemia and lymphoma. Health Minister Sylvia Jones emphasizes the importance of timely access to quality treatment, stating that the FAST program brings hope and advanced care to those in need.
The list of drugs includes Tagrisso, Scemblix, Nubeqa, Calquence, and Opdivo with Yervoy. These medications became available to Ontario patients through FAST in October 2025. However, the controversy lies in the fact that some of these drugs, like Tagrisso, have been approved in Canada since 2016 but were not fully covered by the Ontario Drug Benefit plan. Instead, they were accessible only through the Exceptional Access Program, which offers case-by-case approvals at a cost.
The province plans to fast-track more cancer drug approvals soon. Drugs for the FAST program are selected through Project Orbis, an international effort to speed up regulatory reviews for promising cancer treatments. Meanwhile, drugs not included in FAST may still be accessible through the Exceptional Access Program, but on a more limited basis.
