Hold on to your hats, soccer fans! It seems the Vancouver Whitecaps' preseason is off to a rocky start, as their star defender, Tristan Blackmon, is missing in action due to a contract dispute. Sources close to the situation have confirmed that the reigning MLS Defender of the Year hasn't reported for duty as of Wednesday, the scheduled start of preseason training. All players were expected to be present for medical evaluations to kick off preparations for the upcoming 2026 season.
Blackmon, currently under contract through 2027, is seeking a more lucrative deal, and negotiations between the player and the club are reportedly at a standstill. Adding fuel to the fire, Inter Miami recently made a bid of around $3 million to acquire Blackmon. However, the Whitecaps are adamant about keeping their star player, aiming instead to extend his stay with the team.
“We firmly reject reports suggesting that we are close to completing the transfer of any of our players,” stated Whitecaps CEO Axel Schuster last week. "The situation is, in fact, the exact opposite."
But here's where it gets controversial... Blackmon's current compensation placed him as the 37th highest-paid center back in the MLS last year, earning a guaranteed $800,000. This is despite his crucial role in Vancouver's exceptional 2025 season. He was a key figure in the team's success, which included winning the Canadian Championship and finishing as runner-up in both the MLS Cup and the Concacaf Champions Cup – a historic achievement for the franchise.
Blackmon's impact on the team is undeniable. Since joining the Whitecaps from LAFC in 2022, he has made 141 appearances and even earned his first two caps with the U.S. men’s national team last fall.
The Whitecaps have been busy this winter, having already transferred Ali Ahmed to Norwich City and traded Jayden Nelson to Austin FC. The club is also in contract discussions with star midfielder Sebastian Berhalter, whose 2026 option was exercised after the last season.
