Breaking News: Ilia Topuria, the reigning UFC lightweight champion, has announced a temporary pause in his fighting career, sending ripples through the MMA world.
Topuria revealed on social media that he won't be competing in the first quarter of 2026. This decision stems from a challenging period in his personal life, where he intends to prioritize his children and resolve the situation. He also stated that he doesn't want to hold up the division.
His full statement read:
"I won’t be fighting in the first quarter of next year. I’m going through a difficult moment in my personal life. I want to focus on my children and resolve this situation as soon as possible.
I don’t want to hold up the division. The UFC will make the matchups needed, and as soon as the matters are resolved I’ll let the UFC know I’m ready to begin my return.”
Topuria's recent journey has been nothing short of spectacular. In 2025, he celebrated knockout victories over Max Holloway and Alexander Volkanovski in featherweight championship bouts (in 2024). He then moved up to the lightweight division, where he defeated Charles Oliveira via first-round knockout at UFC 317 this past June, claiming the vacant 155-pound title. This victory made him the 10th fighter in UFC history to win titles in two divisions.
Currently, Topuria holds the No. 2 spot in MMA Fighting’s Pound-for-Pound Rankings, trailing only Islam Makhachev, who became the UFC’s 11th two-division champion.
But here's where it gets controversial... With Topuria sidelined, the lightweight division is buzzing with contenders. Justin Gaethje and Paddy Pimblett have been vocal about their desire for a title shot. Now, they'll likely have to wait until at least April to potentially face "El Matador."
Max Holloway, Topuria's past rival, has already shown support on social media.
