A piece of Goodlettsville history is vanishing before our eyes. RiverGate Mall, once the heart of the community, is preparing to close its doors for good. This marks the end of an era for many long-time residents.
Once bustling with activity, the mall was a favorite hangout spot, drawing crowds of people. Now, however, the scene is drastically different. Most stores have shuttered, leaving behind a sea of empty storefronts. The final day of operation is scheduled for December 31st.
Today, the mall barely echoes its vibrant past, with only a few stores remaining, including J.C. Penney and Dillard’s. Even in its current state, some still find value in the space, using it for exercise.
"I hate to see it go, but change is a part of life," shared mall walker Lloyd Crawford with News 2. This sentiment likely resonates with many who have fond memories of the mall.
But here's where it gets interesting: the property isn't destined to remain vacant. Plans are underway to revitalize the area. The ambitious redevelopment project includes multifamily housing, townhomes, senior housing, retail and restaurants, sports and entertainment facilities, medical offices, general offices, and hotels.
"We’re friends with the mall management, too; they haven’t run us out yet," said Jack Uselton, who continues to walk at the mall. "We’re going to wait until they tell us we can’t come back anymore. We’re going to keep walking.”
The demolition for Phase One is slated to begin in the spring of 2026, according to a representative for the RiverGate development.
This transformation raises a question: While progress is inevitable, is there a sense of loss when a community landmark disappears? What are your thoughts on the redevelopment plans? Share your memories and opinions in the comments below!
