AirBorneo is taking bold steps to reduce its operating costs, and fuel deals with Petronas and Petros are on the table. This move could be a game-changer, but it's also a controversial one.
In a recent press conference, Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin, the state transport minister, revealed that AirBorneo is considering partnerships with major oil companies to lower its fuel expenses, which are a significant burden for any airline.
"Fuel is one of the largest cost components in airline operations," Lee emphasized.
AirBorneo is currently in a transitional phase after taking over MASwings on January 1st. Lee acknowledged that they need time to navigate this new chapter professionally and determine the best course of action for the airline's future.
"We just took over. This is an interim measure. We're still getting our bearings and figuring out the best way forward," he explained.
AirBorneo operates with a dual focus: providing essential air services to remote communities under a public service obligation (PSO) agreement, and developing regional commercial flights in the long term.
"For now, we're concentrating on the immediate future, but we're also planning for the next five years and beyond. We want to ensure a sustainable model for our rural air services," Lee added.
Any expansion plans, including new regional routes, will depend on regulatory approvals, aircraft availability, market demand, and the viability of those routes.
On the workforce front, AirBorneo is partnering with local educational institutions to develop aviation skills across the board.
"We're collaborating with i-CATS University College, Centexs, Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus, and Curtin University Malaysia to build a skilled aviation workforce," Lee said.
Today's inaugural flights from Kuching to Mukah and Tanjung Manis were a success, carrying 54 and 15 passengers, respectively.
